“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where the knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
by narrow domestic walls;
Where the words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless stirving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way in the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action –
Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake”
This prayer has to me, always been a vision of what our Country must become. It has been the spur to action for me ever since I first heard it as a Cadet at the morning Assembly of the Rashtriya Indian Military College and recited many times thereafter, as I am sure it was to most others who heard it there and elsewhere.
To those who find so much to decry and fault in the Policies & Governance of our Nation and the condition of many of its people, I call on them to read this prayer again, and to remember the old saying that even the Almighty will only help those who strive to help themselves.
Finding fault and blaming others is easy, but it remains only discouraging talk unless it is accompanied by the effort to find solutions. We have to seek greater knowledge, strive for better understanding and reach consensus on ways to work together to resolve the issues, without violence.
The Institute for Democratic & Economic Affairz has been setup with this aim and many essays on topical issues even that were written much earlier have been presented on its website www.ideaz4india.com over the past few years. Some of them have been compiled into this book to reach a wider audience amongst fellow Indians encouraging them to read about, and hopefully understand the issues from a more pragmatic and actionable view point than they saw them earlier. Enabling thought and action that will lead to our Country Awakening into that ‘heaven of freedom’, we all desire.
God bless you and God bless India!
